An Automated External Defibrillator (also called a ‘defibrillator, defib, or AED for short), is an easy to use medical device that monitors the heart’s rhythm and it is designed to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. If necessary, it will give the heart an electric shock to defibrillate a heart in fibrillation. The device will guide a user with voice prompts and visuals in an emergent cardiac situation. AEDs are cleared by Health Canada and the FDA for public access.
- Without a bystander using an AED, 70% of cardiac arrest patients either died or survived with impaired brain function.
- A heart attack victim loses 7-10% chance at survival for every minute that an AED is not used.
